BioDiesel Reactor Technologies Inc. BDR Tech is a spin-off company launched in June 2007 which exploits the biodiesel membrane reactor technology developed by Profs. Marc Dubé and André Tremblay. More news to come soon! (This article dated May 2008)

 

Pierre Laberge Prize for Dr. Renata Jovanovic Dr. Renata Jovanovic has been named the winner of the Pierre Laberge Prize at the University of Ottawa as the 2nd best doctoral thesis in the Sciences and Engineering. This has earned her a nomination for the NSERC Doctoral Prize. Dr. Jovanovic is currently working at BASF in Germany. (This article dated November, 2005)

 

CONACYT Scholarship for Gabriela Fonseca Gabriela Fonseca, a PhD student in the polymer reaction engineering group, was recently awarded a CONACYT Scholarship from the Government of Mexico. Great work Gabriela! (This article dated July, 2005)

Jovanovic receives 2003 Carl Dahlquist Award At the recent PSTC Conference in Washington, D.C., Renata Jovanovic was awarded the 2003 Carl Dahlquist Award from the Pressure Sensitive Tape Council (PSTC) for demonstrating “the very best in research relating to adhesive tape technology”. New Equipment Acquisition: Dynamic Mechanical Analyzer As part of his collaboration with the new Centre for Catalysis Research and Innovation (CCRI), a Rheometrics RDA III Dynamic Mechanical Analyzer has been purchased for Dr. Dubé’s lab. This equipment will serve primarily for the measurement of mechanical properties of soft solids. (This article dated May, 2001)

New Equipment Acquisition: Brookhaven Instruments-Disc Centrifuge Photosedimentometer As a result of an NSERC Equipment Grant, a disc centrifuge photosedimentometer manufactured by Brookhaven Instruments has been installed in Dr. Dubé’s lab. The main purpose of this equipment is to measure particle size and particle size distribution of emulsion polymerization latexes. This Equipment Grant includes co-applicants Drs. André Tremblay and Takeshi Matsuura. (This article dated May, 2001)

New Equipment Acquisition: LabMax Reactor As part of his collaboration with the new Centre for Catalysis Research and Innovation (CCRI), a fully automated LabMax Reactor has been installed in Dr. Dubé’s lab. This glass vessel is equipped with temperature control, pH monitoring, semi-batch feeds and can be operated up to 6 atm of pressure. In addition, the reactor is compatible with the ReactIR 1000 in-line infrared monitoring equipment (see Feb. 5, 1999 article below). (This article dated April, 2001)

2000 IPR Scholarship for Renata Jovanovic Renata Jovanovic has triumphed again, winning one of two 2000 IPR Scholarships for academic excellence during a graduate student degree in polymer science/engineering. This scholarship was awarded by the Institute for Polymer Research at the University of Waterloo. Renata has been invited to present her award winning work at the IPR’s 23rd Annual Symposium on Polymer Science/Engineering in Waterloo this May. Congratulations Renata! Noelle McBride leads Univ. of Ottawa Engineering to victory At the 1999 PEO Ottawa Chapter Student Papers Night, Noelle McBride's award for Best Overall Paper led the University of Ottawa Engineering team to victory over Carleton University. Noelle was co-supervised by myself, Dr. David McLean and Dr. Morris Kates (Biochemistry). The title of her presentation was "Modeling the Production of Biodiesel from Waste Frying Oil". Installation of ReactIR 1000 in-line mid-infrared probe The new ReactIR 1000 in-line mid-infrared probe (manufactured by ASI Applied Systems Inc.) has been installed in Dr. Dubé’s lab. This equipment, to be used to continuously monitor the composition and conversion of multicomponent or single component polymerizations, was acquired as part of a Canada Foundation for Innovation award. This award was part of a joint application with Drs. Paul Mayer and Deryn Fogg of the Department of Chemistry. (This article dated Feb. 5, 1999)

Congratulations to Renée-Claude Beauchemin Renée-Claude Beauchemin, who recently completed her undergraduate thesis under Professor Dubé's supervision, is the winner of two prestigious awards. Firstly, at the 48th Canadian Chemical Engineering Conference held in London, Ontario, CANADA October 5 - 8, she won 3rd prize for the undergraduate student paper competition. Furthermore, Renée-Claude has been named this year's winner of the Macromolecular Science and Engineering Division of the Chemical Institute of Canada Undergraduate Thesis Competition.
