Confinement of Reinforced Concrete Columns

Experimental and analytical research has been carried out to investigate the confinement steel requirements for earthquake resistant reinforced concrete columns. Large scale columns were tested under combined axial compression and lateral load reversals. The effects of confinement parameters  were investigated experimentally and analytically. An analytical model was developed for confined concrete. The model was incorporated into a computer software for prediction of inelastic force-displacement relationships of reinforced concrete columns. A displacement based design procedure was developed for column confinement. Confinement of high-strength concrete columns, as well as confinement by welded reinforcement grids, fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) grids, and double headed studs have been investigated.
