Earthquake Resistant High-Strength Concrete Columns

Behavior of reinforced concrete columns with concrete strengths of up to 124 MPa have been investigated by testing near full size columns under monotonically increasing concentric compression as well as constant axial compression combined with incrementally increasing lateral load reversals. The first phase included tests of 50 near-full-size columns with square and circular cross-sections under concentric compression. The second phase included 13 square and 9 circular columns tested under simulated seismic loading. The results indicate that the confinement steel requirements for high-strength concrete should be more stringent that those for normal-strength concrete. Use of high-strength transverse steel provides an effective way of increasing required lateral pressure to levels needed for higher strength concretes. An analytical model has been developed describing the stress-strain characteristics of confined high-strength concrete.
