BIOGRAPHY

Dr. Saatcioglu is a Professor of Structural Engineering at the Department of Civil Engineering of the University of Ottawa.  Previously he was a faculty member at the University of Toronto, Senior Structural Engineer at the Construction Technology Laboratories of the Portland Cement Association, Skokie, Illinios, U.S.A., and Structural Specialist at the Canadian Portland Cement Association in Toronto. Professor Saatcioglu's research interests include behavior and design of reinforced concrete structures, with particular emphasis on seismic behavior and design of concrete buildings and bridges. 


RESEARCH  INTERESTS

  Behavior and design of reinforced concrete structures.
  Design of seismic resistant concrete columns.
  Confinement of normal-strength and high-strength
     concrete columns.
  Seismic resistant design of concrete shear walls.
  Dynamic inelastic response of reinforced concre structures.
  Experimental investigation of large scale reinforced
     concrete elements.
  FRP Reinforced concrete structures.


AWARDS AND HONORS

  Recipient of the CSCE 2001 Casimir Gzowski Metal
      for the best paper in CJCE in Structural Engineering.
   National Lecturer of the Canadian Society of Civil Engineers (CSCE) for 2001.
   Departmental nominee for the 2001 University of Ottawa Award
      for Excellence in Research.

  Recipient of the American Society of Civil Engineer's (ASCE)
      2000 Raymond C. Reese Research prize.
  Selected as Fellow of the American Concrete Institute in
     1997.
  Recipient of the 1996 University of Ottawa Award for
     Excellence in Teaching.
  Recipient of the 1993 Lieutenant Governor's Award for
     Teaching Excellence.
  Recipient of the 1992 Ontario Confederation of University
     Faculty Associations (OCUFA) Teaching Award.
  Recipient of the 1992 John V. Marsh Award for Excellence
     in Teaching.
  Awarded NSERC University Research Fellowship for a
     complete eligible term of 10 years (1980-1990).
  Part of a Group whose work led to the American Concrete
     Institute 1989 Charles Whitney Medal in recognition of
     outstanding engineering development work in concrete
     design and construction.
  Nominee for ASCE Walter L. Huber Civil Engineering
     Research Prize for 1991.
  Nominee for 1994 Canadian Professor of the Year.
  Nominee for the 1995 Canadian Council of Professional
     Engineers Faculty Teaching Award.
  Nominee for 1998 3M Teaching Award, 1989, 1991 and 1992
     OCUFA Teaching Awards, 1991 John V. Marsh Award for
     Excellence in Teaching, and 1989, 1992, 1994 and 1995
