Summary of Projects

Thermal Energy Storage for Solar and Waste Heat Applications

If low quality waste heat from power generating plants can be stored, it can be used later on for space heating or cooling. Also, solar radiation is an abundant and renewable source of energy. For concentrated solar panels, thermal energy could be stored and can be utilized later for space heating or cooling. The purpose of this project is to develop a safe and clean renewable energy storage system for residential and industrial use that enables the stored energy to be used later using adsorption technology with materials that have high energy densities. The system would not have any toxic materials. It would contain materials like air that we breathe, water that we drink and the earth material (adsorbent materials) that we walk on. Also, this system can store the thermal energy forever.

Recycle of CO2 as a Raw Material for the Production of Fuels

Greenhouse gas CO2 can be recycled to be used as a raw material for other chemicals such as fuels, etc. One way of doing this is to convert CO2 to CO using the Reverse Water Gas Shift (RWGS) reaction. If CO2 is mixed with H2 gas under certain operating conditions, using a catalyst, CO gas can be produced using the RWGS reaction. This project looks at scenarios to increase the conversion of this reversible reaction and is carried out in collaboration with Phoenix Canada Oil, Ltd.

Production of Bio-Ethanol and Bio-Butanol from Agricultural Waste to be Used as Fuel

Human activity is changing the composition of the atmosphere. The generation of greenhouse gases (GHGs) is a major environmental concern. The public and the governments at different levels are seeking solutions to this problem. There is an increasing consensus to promote the use of renewable and sustainable energy sources. Canada has targeted transportation, which contributes currently to 25% of CHGs, as a key sector. There is an impetus to increase the proportion of biofuels such as bio-ethanol and bio-butanol used either by itself or blended with gasoline. Bio-ethanol and bio-butanol have the advantage of being produced from cellulosic biomass (feedstocks that have cellulose as a primary constituent) that uses nearly the same amount of CO2 to grow as the CO2 generated by their production and combustion. Therefore, the net production of CO2 is nearly zero when their overall cycle is considered.  They are renewable resources and do not contribute to the production of GHGs. This is the main motivation for the keen interest in the production of alcohol-based fuels. Biomass can potentially be produced from dedicated energy crops and agricultural materials or can be available as a by-product of many industrial processes. The main objective of this study is the use of an adsorption system for improved production during fermentation.

Production of Natural Gas from Landfill Gas as a Sustainable Energy Source

Municipal landfills produce methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) gases and they need to be separated and removed for 2 reasons.  The first is the greenhouse gas reduction.  Since CO2 is a green house gas and CH4 has 20 times the greenhouse gas effect as CO2, technologies and techniques to reduce CH4 and CO2 emissions into the atmosphere are of interest.  The second is developing a technology to recover both pure CO2 and pure CH4 from the landfill gas streams.  The CH4 can be dispensed directly into natural gas pipelines if the purity is high enough and pure CO2 can be obtained for commercial use, enhanced oil recovery or sequestration.  So the nature of the problem is to identify an optimal technique (low capital cost, low operating cost) to recover both pure CO2 and CH4 from these gas sources.  This project looks at the separation and recovery of CO2 and CH4 from landfill gas by using different adsorbent materials to be used by an adsorption process.  The results of this project will help our society to be much more sustainable.

Adsorption Separation of Gases and VOC's

Different graduate  and undergraduate  students have been working in this area under Dr. Tezel's supervision.  These projects include adsorbent screening, and adsorbent tailoring for different separations. Pure and mixture isotherms are determined experimentally.  Different adsorption models have been used for the prediction of mixture isotherms and compared to the experimental ones. Modeling of the adsorption process has been carried out for different scenarios. Adsorbents used include ZSM-5, silicalite, Zeolite 4A, Zeolite 5A, Zeolite 13X, erionite, chabazite, clinoptilolite, mordenite, different activated carbons, carbon molecular sieve, activated carbons, AlPO4-11, AlPO4-17, AlPO4-18.  Some of these synthetic and natural adsorbents have been modified, ion-exchanged and treated under different conditions to improve the separation before they are used as adsorbents.

Inorganic Adsorbent Membranes

The possibility of improving both the selectivity and the flux for gas separation applications with inorganic adsorbent membranes has been looked at for separation of CO2, CH4, H2, N2 and other gases by synthesizing crystalline zeolites on top and in the pores of different inorganic support materials. Preliminary results are very promising, with observed separation factors much higher than membranes alone or adsorbents alone.
